This data layer provides an inventory of active center pivot irrigation systems for the year 2001. Center pivots were identified and delineated using multi-date 2001 Landsat 7 satellite imagery.
Identifying irrigated areas within the Central Platte River Basin provides important information necessary to supplement the hydrologic modeling in the study area. Irrigation data serve a variety of purposes, from water resources planning to land use planning. This data could also be used for watershed analysis and other natural resource management activities.

Center pivot irrigation areas were identified using 2001 Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. Multi-date satellite imagery were collected across the study area to capture spring, summer and fall growing conditions. Center pivots were digitized on screen using ESRI software and were collected across the COHYST study area including a one kilometer buffer. Center pivots were checked for accuracy using 2001 Farm Service Agency reporting records, registered irrigation well data, 1993 and 1999 digital orthophotography and existing knowledge of 2001 irrigated areas provided by Nebraska Natural Resource Districts and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources.
