Irrigated lands estimate for Scotts Bluff County, Summer 2002. This file was created using satellite imagery and field data to estimate irrigated from non-irrigated fields during the drought of 2002.
Purpose:
This shapefile was created as part of a COHYST (Cooperative Hydrology in the Central Platte River Basin) sponsored study to determine if a satellite derived vegatation index (NDVI) could be used to identify irrigated fields during the summer of 2002.

Process_Description:
Two Landsat 7 satellite images were acquired for Scotts Bluff County on July 18th and August 19th, 2002. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated for these dates to measure the health and vigor of vegetation. Using field data collected in the fall of 2002, significant threshold NDVI values were identified in the imagery. A non-agricultural mask was applied to the NDVI images to remove non-agricultural areas from the analysis. Using the field data it was determined that NDVI values greater than 98 (for the July 18th image) and NDVI values greater than 120 (for the August 19th image) were found to represent the most irrigated pixels with out significantly misclassifying non-irrigated pixels. Both images were merged into one file to provide the best estimate for irrigated lands in Scotts Bluff County. A series of filters were applied to this raster file to eliminate mixed pixels. This final raster file was converted to a shapefile.
