Example Applications of Interactive Mapping Technologies (Internet -
GIS)

Dept. of Natural Resources
Registered Groundwater Wells Data Retrieval (select link "Select Well from Interactive Map") provides a interactive map to view and zoom into a particular area and select a particular well to view the related tabular data on that well. This site shows examples of graphic/tabular interface of specific databases, with other optional data layers that can be turned on to provide background reference. Also available at this site:
Lincoln/Lancaster County
This site provides access to an interactive mapping service for local information related to property, crime data, zoning information, flood plain, weed control, and wilderness park. The site provides online graphic/tabular interface to specific databases with other background graphic layers available for reference. One can search graphically and then view the related tabular data or by specific data fields and then view the related map.
Other State Applications
This site is rather unusual in that it is not designed around a specific application, but is a very multifaceted, flexible site. The site allows one to select from quite a variety of database/map layers which to display, which to query, and which to "identify" tabular feature information from. One can select for all of the following general data layer categories and within each category is also available multiple database choices: Administrative, Agricultural, Base Map, Cultural, Drinking Water, Facility, Floodplain, Geology, Health, Housing, Hydrography, Imagery, Income, Land Cover, Political, Population, Soil, Topography, Transportation, Water Quality, Watershed, and Wetlands.
This site uses online interactive mapping technology to produce thematic, color-coded maps to illustrate Vermont staticial indicators (by counties, by schools, by town, etc.). Application provide the ability to produce a wide variety of color-coded thematic maps for different social/economic indicators.
Montana Cadastral Mapping Project
Site shows the potential of providing a statewide portal for property parcel information. Information is not yet available for all areas, but those available on can do either a textual or geographical/graphic search to access the data.
This site provides the ability to graphically search for different types of businesses, services, education, training, child care, and bus routes.
Locate "brownfield" redevelopment sites in New Jersey. Also an interesting feature of this site is if you go to the more general New Jersey maps via the "MapGarden" link you will encounter a user ID and password page. You can enter as a "guest" but this illustrates how you can allow selective users different levels of access to your data and GIS tools.
North Dakota Groundwater Sensitivity Maps
Maps sensitive areas for pesticide, herbicide and Fungicide applications in North Dakota
Maps of Montana Rivers, one can search by river name, fish species, county, etc.
This site provides access to a broad range of DEQ data in different formats. One of the formats provided is via interactive maps (click on "Enter Permitted Facilities Interactive Maps Application"). Once one locates a permitted facility or stream of interest one can then click on that feature to access tabular data related to that feature. Another layout and view of the some of same data is DEQ's Facility Profiler application.
Local and Regional Applications
This local government site provides a good illustration of a wide range of applications of using this technology to provide citizen information such as: real estate/property tax, voting/representatives, park and recreation facilities locator, school assignment, government services locator, crime, flood plain, and map & go directions.
A well design site that again shows how a wide variety of local government information can be provided and illustrated using this technology. The site has access to major thematic categories of land information, public works, community, demographics and public safety. Within each of these broad categories there a multiple data themes that can be optionally accessed and displayed.
North Texas Transportation Improvement Program Information System
This site maintained by a North Texas Council of governments allows one to access and display information on current and planned transportation improvement projects in the Dallas-Fort Worth planning area.
An interactive map site jointly operated by the City and County of San Diego provides a wide variety of online interactive mapping applications
This site is similar to other local government site, in that it allows you to access and display a variety of data layers. One distinctive feature is that it allows online users to use more GIS tools that many sites to not allow. Some of these tools are: select feature by rectangle or polygon, measure distances, pan by drag, etc. These and other tools are ones that a site developer can choose to make available to online users or not, or they can be available to selective users
Interesting Private Applications
Operated by a private consulting firm, provides the ability to search for nursing homes in a given geographic area. Site has the capability to zoom into a given area and then generate a listing of nursing homes in your zoomed into area and then generate a map for a specific nursing home of interest. The site appears to have the ability for outside viewers to submit new listing or revisions of current listings.
Site allows you to conduct nationwide searches, geographically, for homes for sale. Allows you to zoom in to a particular neighborhood, give price range and home feature search criteria and then view a photo of houses meeting those criteria.
This demo site by ESRI illustrates how you can use interactive mapping technologies to generate on the fly a wide range of thematics maps to illustrate and convey statistical data.
