Codes for Inclusion of Locational Data in the
Nebraska Department of Water Resources
Registered Wells Database

The codes described in this document provide metadata for the locational coordinates using standardized fields that describe the latitude - longitude coordinates and how they were collected. These seven fields are the minimum set of metadata that must be included when providing locational data to the Department of Water Resources (DWR) for inclusion in the Registered Wells database. Locational data submitted without all seven of these codes will not be accepted. In addition, DWR will add a eigth field when data are submitted that indicates that there is a "history" or "duplicate" for this locational information.

The following is a list of the seven required metadata fields.

  1. DWR well registration number
  2. Latitude *
  3. Longitude *

* both latitude and longitude must be submitted to DWR in decimal degrees and in the NAD83 datum

  1. Method of collection
  2. Date of collection
  3. Source (agency, organization, etc.)
  4. Verification

Explanation of Code Fields

  1. DWR Registration Number
  2. Latitude
  3. Longitude
  4. Method of Collection/Accuracy Value
  5. Date of Collection
  6. Source
  7. Verification
    1. GPS Ground Truth (meaning that a percentage of wells have been visited again and their location determined by GPS, again)
    2. Verified Relative To Map Features on 1:12,000 DOQ (points are plotted on a 1:12,000 scale map and determined to be in the proper location)
    3. Verified on 1:24,000 Map Features
    4. Verified on 1:100,000 Map Features
    5. Not Verified

It was determined that one additional field may be useful for inclusion in the DWR’s Registered Wells database. DWR will fill this field, it is not the responsibility of the data supplier. This "history" or "duplicate" field would specify whether there were multiple coordinates available for a given well. In cases where multiple coordinates are available, potential users could evaluate which coordinate is most appropriate for their utilization of the data.

Attached is Appendicies A and B listing codes described in this document. A sample individual well location form is also included, along with a suggested one page instruction sheet.
