The Nebraska GPS Base Station Project

The Nebraska State Surveyor’s Office, with the support of the GIS Steering Committee and seed funding from the Legislature, has established three Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) base stations located across the state. These base stations will allow local governments, and other users of GPS technology, to significantly enhance the accuracy of their GPS positional readings through a process called post-processing. Through cooperative efforts with local governments and private interests, the State Surveyor has been able to upgrade the quality of all three base stations beyond what was originally planned, based on available Legislative funding. The readings from these GPS base stations will be available over the Internet, at no cost to the user. These base stations should increase the availability and accuracy of GPS technology for local governments, and significantly reduce its costs of its utilization.

The three GPS base stations are located in Lincoln, Grand Island and Scotts Bluff. They are operational and can be accessed at http://www.sso.state.ne.us/gps/.
